about
’Save Your Life’ is the second single by Star Circus, written and performed by Dave Winkler (Ryan Hamilton, Trophies of Man, Renegade Playboys, Annabella’s Bow Wow Wow). It's an altogether darker, heavier and more emotive song than the debut release, ‘Love is the Enemy', but still retains the energy and melodic integrity that has been established.
"The song was written in the wake of Chris Cornell's tragic suicide. As much as I was a fan, it’s not a tribute or homage, it's about the concept that you can often fail to know what’s happening in someone's head unless they choose to communicate. People who appear to be successful, healthy and happy sometimes have an inner turmoil that they don't share with the outside world. I had a close friend at the time who was suffering from depression, sleep deprivation and alcoholism and struggling to acknowledge or talk to other people about it. I could see him approaching a similar fate, which nearly happened a few months after the song was written.”
The track’s subject matter is extra poignant during the uncertain times the world is facing during the Covid-19 pandemic. Communication is more important than ever, especially regarding our mental health, as we are all reassessing what is truly important in life.
Once again produced by Tony Wilson, mastermind of the BBC Radio 1 Friday Rock Show and TotalRock, the track features performances by Dan Stevens of Inglorious on bass, drums by Moyano El Buffalo (Ella Skye, Diamond Black, Louise Distras), and some choral vocals featuring Sisters of Mercy guitarist Ben Christo. It is likely to be the opening track of the forthcoming album, due later this year.
lyrics
SAVE YOUR LIFE
Wake up, same old bed
Same old drummer banging in your head
Last night left for dead
Demon in your eyes is glowing red
Inside looking out, breakdown, roundabout
A fading light in the darkness
Lost days sleepless nights, can’t find the will to fight
Who will you turn to this time when it all falls down?
Dark clouds, endless haze
Minutes turn to hours turn to days
No sense holding on
Living for existence then you’re gone, gone, gone
Black days, fallen on, think you’re the only one
Wasting love in avoidance,
Burnout time to kill, not now, never will
Who will you turn to this time when it all falls down?
Why are you lying to yourself?
When you could listen to someone else
You always hide within yourself
And when you’re dying inside who’s gonna save your life?
Stuck in a rigmarole of your own making
Will you take control?
Needing to feed your brain you try in vain
But you refuse to dream, you hear the silence scream
Wake up, same old thing
All the bells inside your mind begin to ring
No need for sympathy
When you’re lying face down in a pool of misery
Outside looking in, a place you’ve never been
The other side of the darkness
Upside looking down, last chance to turn around
A final beacon of light as you run aground
Why are you lying to yourself?
When you should listen to someone else
You always hide within yourself
And when you’re dying inside who’s gonna save your life?
Yeah, you're lying to yourself
You need to listen to someone else
You always hide within yourself
And when you’re dying inside who’s gonna save your life?
